ESPN Films — By Grantland Rice

The Brief:
ESPN Films needed a supporting graphics system for By Grantland Rice, an SEC Storied documentary about one of the most influential sportswriters of the early 20th century. The film looks back at Rice’s career and the golden age of American sports through his perspective as a reporter and storyteller. ESPN Press Room

The Process:
I designed and built the lower thirds and supporting graphics used throughout the film, creating a system that could sit naturally alongside archival footage and historical storytelling without overpowering it. The goal was to keep the information clear and editorial while maintaining a visual language that felt appropriate to the period and tone of the documentary.

The Outcome:

  • Lower-third system designed for the full documentary
  • Supporting graphics used throughout the film
  • Broadcast-ready motion assets built around archival storytelling
  • Graphics integrated into an ESPN Films / SEC Storied production
  • Final piece directed by Joe Lavine and released as part of the SEC Storied documentary series ESPN Press Room
